A 5-day Teaching Skills Training (TST) was conducted on May 17-21, 2010 at STI Tagum. This was participated by several faculty members from different STI branches in South Eastern and Central Mindanao areas. We were 10 participants who came from Kidapawan City.

 

The TST training program aims to promote a student-centered learning environment by equipping STI faculty with practical teaching knowledge and skills reflecting the institution’s principles and philosophies. Its general objective is to enhance the teacher’s competencies in teaching-learning approaches, methodologies and techniques to suit diverse learner’s needs. 

 

The training has equipped me with more knowledge and skills required in my profession. I have come to realize and appreciate the importance of the Teaching/Learning Transactional Model (T/LTM Framework) and its relevance in the actual teaching practices. I am now more reflective in whatever lessons or activities that I might give to my students being aware of the different learning domains and instructional approaches in the learning process. It is evident that students are diverse and have different patterns or styles of learning and that they exhibit multiple intelligences during teaching-learning activities. It has always been a big challenge for me on how to deal with the individual differences of the students.

 

The training has taught me new and valuable insights such as how to identify appropriate instructional materials, formulate engaging classroom activities, create a classroom situation/environment conducive to learning, relate classroom activities to real life situations, how to motivate students, conduct assessment, manage time and share best practices. As a whole, the training was so beneficial to me and somehow has helped me become a better teacher.  - Juncool
